Why these courses are unique
Before the Institute started, Venerable Chris Roberts had substantial experience as a long-time student who had studied in the West (as a Westerner) and had experienced many hardships. In 1992, Rinpoche asked her to be the resident teacher at the Institute.
In Tibetan Buddhism, it is recognised that permanent healing can’t take place unless the root cause of the problem is addressed and healed. Consequently, Venerable Chris also saw the need to study Western problems and their causes and to explore the most appropriate methods and techniques for Westerners.
After six years of research, Venerable Chris moved the Institute to Chatswood and began to write the first program. Since that time, Venerable Chris has been continuing with the development of the programs:
- They are designed so that Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike can benefit from the Buddhist teachings. It is not for those who wish to study Buddhism merely intellectually or to collect philosophy. These programs are for those who want to grow in themselves and change.
- Venerable Chris does not cater to “quick fixes” and “cover-ups”. She encourages students to address the underlying causes of problems, thus solving them completely in a gentle and safe environment.
- She presents the teachings in a way that is inspirational and uncommonly insightful and leaves no room for misunderstanding, so that Buddhism itself doesn’t become a cover-up. The only variable is your own willingness to grow.
All programs on Overcoming Problems are run on a donational basis, as His Holiness the Dalai Lama requested of us in 1992 when the Institute was founded by His Eminence Khejok Tulku Rinpoche.
Program One generally starts in October and runs for 1.5 hours, with an optional 30-minute meditation afterwards. The program runs for 12 months. Retreats are part of the program.
New participants to Program One may be accepted for the first few weeks after Program One begins. After this, it is too difficult for most people to catch up.
Once Program One is completed, students are then able to go onto Program Two.
We are located in Chatswood at Level 4, 12 Thomas Street, next to the railway station.
